A strong Hertfordshire contingent made the journey to Nottingham for the IproSports British National Masters Squash Championships last weekend and put in a great performance including 2 National Titles!
Tony Clifford beat all comers, including multiple World Champion, Adrian Wright, to win the Men’s Over 80s round robin Title after his (lack of) map reading skills almost caused him to miss his first match!
Louisa Dalwood beat Sarah Parr (Berks) 12 – 10 in the fifth after a titanic battle (and a lucky match ball nick) for her first National Title (Women’s Over 50s). Libby Montgomery also had 2 match balls in her quarter final against Sarah for a place in the Final against Louisa, as it turned out, when Rachel Calver (Leics) withdrew injured.
Eamonn Price lost 3 – 1 to ex-World Number 11 Bryan Beeson (NLD) in the Men’s Over 60s Final having beaten number 1 seed Mark Woodliffe in the semi final. Having elminated 5/8 seed Steve Calvert with a great performance, Teejay Sogunro lost in the quarter finals of Mens Over 60’s. Keith Winfield also played in the 60s.
Andrew Eilfield and Marvin Rust both reached the quarter finals of the Men’s Over 55s and lost tight encounters.
Andy Duckworth and Chris Lynam reached the last 16 of the Men’s Over 45s and 50s respectively and then had good runs in their plate events with Chris winning his. Herts Old Boy Mike Gregory won his first National Title in the Men’s Over 50s.
England team places for 2023/24 will be announced soon with Louisa Dalwood, Chris Lynam, Andrew Eilfield and Eamonn Price well placed to be selected to represent their country. Ali Coker (off skiing), Teejay Sogrunro and Marvin Rust may narrowly miss out this year. Mhairi Gritz may represent Scotland again this year. Isobel Smith’s and Keith Timms’ injuries this year have prevented them from adding to their England caps
