Dear all

Welcome to the (slightly delayed) March edition of the East Region Newsletter.
There has been all sorts of great activity going on recently so I strongly suggest getting yourself a cup of tea, sit back and take it all in!
Please remember that all articles have links to much more detailed versions so please click anywhere you see a blue link or something underlined!

I would also like to draw your attention to some very exciting events coming up and some great news stories that weren’t released in time to make the full version of the Newsletter this time round:

The British U23s will again take place at Hunts County from April 12th – 14th Click ‘here’ for Info.

Congratulations to Peter Barker who made the Final at Canary Wharf, Alison Waters who got to the Final in Kuala Lumpur and Ritchie Fallows who did the same at the European Junior Championships.

English Junior Championships

Surrey Sports Park and Wimbledon Racquets & Fitness Club hosted the Tecnifibre English Junior Championships on Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd March, welcoming 250 of England’s finest young squash players.

The East juniors did exceptionally well with five finalists and two National champions!

In the Boys U19s, Richie Fallows (Essex) went down 3-2 to Oliver Holland in a tremendous, hard fought, 70 minute battle. Holland adds the BU19 trophy to the British Junior Championship title he

won earlier in the season, making him a double champion in his last year of junior squash.The Boys U17s saw Josh Turmel (Suffolk) reach his first major final. Turmel gave a great account of himself, unfortunately Patrick Rooney proved too strong, winning 11-6 in the fifth. Rooney adds the U17 title to his previous EJC U13 and U15 titles.

In the Girls U15s, Lucy Turmel (Suffolk) made her way into her first major final just as her brother Josh did. However, fellow East Region Academy player and top seed, Grace Gear (Hertfordshire), proved too strong for Lucy and took the Girls U15 title 3-2. The final game was close, but it was Gear who closed it 11-7 to take the title.

Elise Lazarus (Essex) continued her domination in the GU13s as she successfully defended her crown. Lazarus came up against 3/4 seed Karina Tyma (Avon). After a tight first game on Lazarus turned up the heat and raced through the next two games 11-2 and 11-3 to win 3-0 in 15 minutes. Lazarus has now done the ‘double double’ by claiming both British and English U13 titles in the past two years.

East Region Racketball

The 2013 East Region Racketball Championships took place at Bishop’s Stortford Squash & Racketball Club in Hertfordshire on Saturday 9th March.

In total there were four draws: Men’s A, Men’s B, Men’s O50s and Ladies.

Five Nations Success

The England U15s and U17s retained their Five Nations titles in Le Mans, France on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th March.

The East was ably represented by current GU13 and GU15 English Junior Champions Elise Lazarus (Essex – far right) and Grace Gear (Herts -second from right) respectively.

Connaught Exhibition

Friday 15^thMarch was a night to remember at The Connaught Club in Essex. On Red Nose Day, the club held a squash exhibition featuring several professionals and Essex juniors.

Current England internationals, Daryl Selby and Peter Barker were on hand to exhibit their skills.

Sports Administrator of the Year

Paul Main, the Luton & Dunstable Squash Club Chairman, has won the Sports Administrator of the Year Award at the Luton Sports Network Awards.

The Connaught Club in Essex is hosting the East Region’s British Open Pre-Qualifiers on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th April.

LDS in NCC Semi Finals!

Teenage sensation Joe Green set Luton & Dunstable Squash Club (LDS) up for a fabulous result as they defeated Coolhurst Tennis & Squash Club 4-1 to reach the semi-final of the ESR National Club Championships.

Having despatched the legendary Edgbaston Priory club in the previous round, LDS felt confident as they travelled to Coolhurst in North London on Saturday 23^rd March. Few, however, would have predicted the outcome.
