Herts O’45 Win Promotion!
Report by Marvin Rust 25th March 2013
I am delighted to report a successful weekend for Hertfordshire in the Men’s O45 Intercounty competition. This was a promotion weekend and sees Hertfordshire reach the Premier Division as a result of some fine performances.
At late withdrawal by Norfolk caused me and the Broxbourne hosts (thanks to Teresa for her help) some additional work in rescheduling courts, meals and timings.
Saturday morning saw Berkshire destroy Essex with the winning score of 20-2 which left us nervous going into the afternoon game against Berkshire. We thought a 3-2 either way was the most likely result. However Stephen Lloyd playing at 5 showing his usual match play tenacity ground out a great win for us over 5 games against an equally obdurate opponent. Further wins followed by Andy Eidfeld and myself at 3 and 4 to take us to a match winning position. Eamonn took out his opponent on another win against the head 3-1 to take us into a 4-0 lead. Las Fernando couldn’t quite match his opponent and lost in 3 but a 4-1 and 17-7 win left us in good heart for the Sunday battle.
We needed 10 points on Sunday against Essex who turned up with Andy Russell at 5 so some considerable strength in depth. The team though raised the game again and won easily 20-2 to reach the promise land of the Premier League!
